I Went Back To The Keto Diet And I Have No Regrets
Here’s my experience after one week
In 2020, I tried the keto diet with the encouragement of a friend. I had a few failed attempts, but once I got going, I loved it. I thought I could never live without massive amounts of carbs, but I was wrong.
Why did I stop?
Well, you might remember a little panic/pandemic called COVID-19. A lot of us lost our bearings. The truth is, the stress of it sent me running back to the comfort of carbs. And I kinda got lost in.
Over the past few years, I’ve tried doing a “balanced” diet. And the truth is, balance and I are not friends.
I either drink water all the time throughout the day or I don’t drink water at all. I either walk religiously every day or I don’t exercise at all. I’m either really social and go out and do things with people all the time or I isolate in my house and pretend the world doesn’t exist.
You get the picture.
So, when my diabetes was out of control, I knew I had to do something about my diet. I attempted “dirty keto” but the very presence of any carbs in my life made me want more carbs. I’d have whole grain bread or a flax seed flatbread but then all I would think about was having more. I’d have one piece of pizza and want five pieces.
And even on the days when I did “good” and only had a little bit of carbs, my blood sugars were still high. It seemed like any starchy food would make my blood sugars sky rocket. Every morning I was waking up with high numbers, even after not eating anything since supper the night before.
I decided to go back to full keto last weekend.
I started with a 24-hour fast. Why? Because eating is often a habit. Many of us eat because we’re bored or because it’s just what is expected of us in social situations. Even at home, I feel weird to not eat when my partner is eating.
I’ve done fasting before and it always helps me remember that food is fuel, not entertainment. You can still enjoy food without treating it like it’s a hobby.
I was proud of myself and more determined than ever to go back to keto. I started the next day.
Since I started back on keto, I’ve begun to see results already.
In the past five days, I’ve been taking my blood sugars twice a day. First thing in the morning and 2 hours after my last meal of the day. Checking your blood sugar 2 hours after a meal tells you if the food choices you made are healthy. If your blood sugar stays in the healthy range (my doctor says below 7.8 mmol/L) then you’re good to eat that food. But if it is over, it’s causing a blood sugar spike and you should avoid it.
During those 5 days, my blood sugars have been in normal range all except once and I know what that once was about. I had broccoli salad, which can be healthy, but I bought some from the deli and I’m guessing there was a significant amount of sugar in their dressing.
Also, in the past week, I’ve lost 4 lbs. I know that high weight loss is not desirable in general but at the beginning a lot of it is water weight, so I’m not concerned.
Do you want to know more about my keto experience? I have a doctor’s appointment coming up so I’m going to talk to him about it then. If you want to know more, leave a comment and make sure to follow.
